I have taken this colour palette of browns and pinks from the Dulux website, so that I can see what colours compliment the bathroom curtains.
The photo that I took below shows the bedlinen that the client would like to use in the bedroom, kept from her old house. It is white with a mixture of pink tones in the pattern, so the colour scheme I have chosen for the bedroom design (agreed by the client) is pinks. The pinks will give a warmth to the room without being too bold and too on-trend, and will make the room feminine, perfect for a single woman's bedroom.
The colour palette below, also taken from the Dulux website, shows different pinks that will compliment the furnishings and fabrics that she wants to include in the new bedroom, and I can use this as a guide when designing the room.
This is a photo of the double bed that she is taking with her.
This photo shows one of the two identical bedside tables
she is taking. The fabric on the table matches the fabric
of the bed.
This is the taller of the two chest of drawers. The white
colour also adds a very feminine feel to the room.
This is the second of the chest of drawers. It is the same
design as the other one but just smaller in height.
These sets of chest of drawers were bought by my client specifically for her old cottage (her previous home) as a place for extra storage. They were bought 26 years ago, just from the local MFI shop, so there is no special meaning or history behind them.
Because the design of the bedroom will be based around the bedcovers, I have created an image showing it's importance, following Pete's lesson on deconstruction of images and semiotics.
Looking at white furniture
My client is taking two white chest of drawers with her for the bedroom, so I will carry out some research into how white furniture can be used in interiors.
I have found a couple of photos of interiors online showing different colour schemes that can be used with white furnishings.

This image shows that white furniture can be placed in a fairly plain
interior with very pale colours of whites and creams.

This image shows that it can also work well against a coloured wall, as it breaks
up the block colour of the walls and makes the room appear brighter. This is useful
because my client wants her bedroom to be designed around the bedcovers, which
includes a pink/purple colour palette.

The white furniture can work with other textures such as the tiled flooring, and
also suit different styles, not just modern. White makes the room feel a lot more
spacious as well, particularly against a duller colour, which is the pale brown in this image.

As shown in this image, white furniture can stand out from a dark background wall,
adding a lighter feel to the room. It creates quite a dramatic look and allows a darker
colour to be used which may otherwise be too dark without the white to balance it.
An article I have found called 'Advantages of using white furniture' explains how white furniture can be used in an interior.
White bedroom furniture can be combined with colours on the walls and the floor. It will go with nearly every colour, so is a neutral starting point. It also gives the opportunity for a accent colour to be used, whether for a feature wall or small furnishings such as cushions and curtains.
Another advantage of using white furniture is because 'white will brighten up any other colour you have in the room'. It allows other coloured objects to stand out more, which is particularly good if there are any ornate furnishings and unique furnishings in the room.
However, white may not always work in a positive way. If the whole room is white, it can look like
a hospital room, and not very homely, so adding a colour in somewhere is almost a must.
So, after reading this article, I can conclude that white will work with almost any colour, which will allow me to be flexible when designing my client's bedroom, and that it is important to have an accent colour, which can be reflected from the bedcovers she is taking with her, in pink and purple tones. The white furniture will also brighten up the room more, which is particularly good as her new maisonette is fairly small in size.
